Microsoft announced
that anyone can now make Skype calls via the web without the need to
create an account or download the app. According to them:
“We’ve made it easier than ever for you to connect with anyone on Skype, without needing to register or even downloading it. By joining Skype as a Guest, you can quickly chat, voice or video call without any hassle. [It’s] perfect if you’re new to Skype and want to quickly chat with someone, anywhere in the world, for free.”
To do this, you would need to visit Skype.com on your web browser — Yup! No mobile support for this one — Select the “Start a conversation” button as seen below.
Enter your name and click on the “Start a conversation” button, this will launch a new guest window.
However, you will not be able to search for a name or email address,
instead, you need to send a conversation link to others (by email, for
example) so that they can join your conversation. The link will only
last for 24 hours. After that, the user would have to start the whole
process again.
Did I mention that you would need to download a plugin to make a video or voice call?
Those who already have a Skype account might not find this useful, but
the new feature can come in handy when you are looking to have a
conversation with people who don’t.
In my opinion, Skype has lost the mobile market where conversations are
usually 1-to-1. But their strength lies in group video chats and
enterprise, and it’s nice to see that they seem to be aware of that.
